The Katyn Massacre - mass execution of Polish nationals by the Soviet Union in April-May 1940. The official proposal to execution was approved and signed by Joseph Stalin. The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000, the most commonly cited number being 21,768. Among the killed there were 8,000 officers. The rest of killed were Polish doctors, professors, lawyers, police officers and priests.
